Build Your Own Light Splitter

Dayton 5X847 Power Relay

  1. THIS RELAY WIRING SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN. POTENTUALLY LETHAL VOLTAGES ARE PRESENT.AT ALL TIMES WHILE IN OPERATION. RELAY MUST BE MOUNTED IN AN INSULATING ELECTRICAL “BOX” TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ELECTRICUTION.
  2. Unplug ballast from power.
  3. Cut lamp cord aprox. 12” from ballast.
  4. Orient the Dayton 5X874 power relay as shown in Diagram.
  5. Strip black and white wires coming from the ballast and attach to the screw terminals as shown in diagram.
  6. Strip black and white wires coming from one reflector and attach to the screw terminals as shown in diagram.
  7. Strip black and white wires coming from the other reflector and attach to the screw terminals as shown in diagram.
  8. Strip all 3 green wires and connect them together with a wire nut.
  9. Use a simple two wire “Lamp” cord as a “trigger” to control the relay. Strip the conductors and attach to the screw terminals as shown in diagram.
  10. Plug the trigger cord into a timer. When the timer is on one lamp will light when the timer turns off the relay will switch the first lamp off and turn the other lamp on.
  11. When the relay is in operation there are dangerous voltages present. For safety mount the wired relay in a protective plastic electrical “box”. These are available at most any home improvement center.
